We’re all about giving people flexibility – over the way people work and, as a result, the way people live! Even with the help of Catapult, we know it can be difficult to make time for your passions or studies when you’ve got work to do. So, to help you along, we spoke to some members of Catapult’s head office team about their passions and how they find a balance between them with work.

Passion: acting

Why is acting important to you?

Art is important for the world! It’s one of the best mediums for people to learn and experience things. Acting is important to me for so many reasons: I get to learn a huge amount about the world and people, I get to learn a huge amount about myself and it’s probably one of the most fun jobs ever!

How often do you make time for your acting?

It’s a huge part of my life; whether it’s reading, going to the theatre, watching a film, auditioning. I’d say at least half of my week.

Why do you think it’s important to make extra time for your acting?

Because it makes me happy! I can’t imagine my life without it.

What techniques do you use to make sure you get a balance between doing what you love and work?

I recently went part-time at work (I’m very lucky to have such a supportive and caring side job), so that has been incredibly helpful, and I need to also make sure I get enough sleep and rest so that I can enjoy my passion

Passion: photography

Why is your photography important to you?

Photography is my invitation into people’s lives and it has introduced me to so many cool people. I’m currently photographing London’s coffee professionals and, having worked in the scene for awhile, it has been amazing to connect with people I admire and have the work to show for it!

How often do you make time for your photography?

I try my best to fit in photo shoots for the project on my days off or before work. Sometimes I’m able to squeeze a shoot into a slightly longer lunch break, which is awesome! When I develop the film, I do this after work and find it a really meditative practice as it’s so consistent and repetitive.

Why do you think it’s important to make extra time for your photography?

It’s so important to live your own truth and for me photography is definitely a part of that. It’s super important to have an outlet of some sort and this can drive you to want to constantly better yourself. Every day I’m learning new ways of communicating and keeping in touch with the coffee part of my life. Plus it feels great to make work you’re proud of and also enjoy the whole process.

What techniques do you use to make sure you get a balance between doing what you love and work?

I try my best to structure things and make full use of my calendar. Once it’s in there, I won’t forget it and it helps so much to motivate me further. I’m able to fit this project around work as we’re so close to many of my coffee pals by bicycle or public transport. Just another reason London is awesome! I’m also really driven by these interactions with people, so they give me energy both in and out of work, which makes it so much easier to keep this going!

Passion: Arsenal F.C.

Why is your Arsenal Football Club important to you?

Ever since I was born, I’ve been shoehorned into being an Arsenal fan. My family has always been Arsenal, my uncle wrote a bestseller about Arsenal. Arsenal is a way of life and in my DNA.

How often do you make time for your Arsenal?

I go to every home game they play and 60% of away games. So once a week it takes up a whole afternoon.

Why do you think it’s important to make extra time for Arsenal?

It’s healthy to be passionate about a variety of things, not just work – though I’m not sure the emotional torment of following a subpar football team is good for my ticker.

What techniques do you use to make sure you get a balance between doing what you love and work?

Well, Arsenal don’t play during work hours so it isn’t too hard. That said when the World Cup was on, concentrating on work was much harder when there were some big games on.

Passion: Learning about machine learning

Why is learning about machine learning important to you?

I’m passionate about machine learning because I’ve always been fascinated by the human brain. Learning about machine learning is cool because the latest techniques are inspired by the way our own minds work. It also lies at the intersection of the incredible fields of neuroscience, computer science and robotics!

How often do you make time for studying machine learning?

Recently, I tended to do at least an hour each day. There’s a lot to learn in the self-made curriculum I’m following and the faster I learn, the more cool things I can make.

Why do you think it’s important to make extra time for your passion?

That’s a great question. I think having a passion outside of your normal work makes life a lot more interesting. Every day is more inspiring as you get to nourish your curiosity, improve your capacity to learn and meet amazing people who can help you understand the world in a novel way. Also, the world is constantly changing so having an outside interest is one way of keeping up and keeping your skills sharp!

What techniques do you use to make sure you get a balance between doing what you love and work?

I tend to use software tools to help me organise my schedule. So things like Google Calendar, Trello, and Wunderlist. With this triple combo, it’s much easier to make sure I’m making time to prioritise easily and manage my time effectively. Lastly, there’s a cool app called Habitica that I use to help keep me enthused on this learning journey.
